sotp.bmp (7110 bytes)Warning! Before you read this book and review you may want to read The Thrawn Trilogy so you can get a feel for the characters in this duology and so I don’t ruin The Thrawn Trilogy for you.

Specter of the Past is the first of two in The Hand of Thrawn duology. This book takes place ten years after The Thrawn Trilogy and if you liked the first trilogy by Timothy Zahn you will love this duology written by him.

To start off the book Zahn has Admiral Pellaeon recalling memories from ten years ago. Admiral Pellaeon has realized that the Empire needs to make a peace agreement with the New Republic because of the Empire’s once vast power is dwindling as each passing day goes by. So Pellaeon tries to convince the Moff’s and other leaders of the Empire to agree with him and try to make peace between the two groups. As this is going on Luke is trying to find a mysterious group of pirate ships because of a Jedi sensation he had when he encountered these ships the first time. While a certain Moff gives Admiral Pellaeon his blessings he has a very different plan for the New Republic. Moff Disra tries to make the New Republic crumble by upsetting the Bothans with the rest of the New Republic. Later on the New Republic finds out that indeed Grand Admiral Thrawn is alive. Some are skeptical about this and think of it as a trick so the tension between the New Republic gets even thicker. While all this is happening the New Republic like so many other times is in panic trying to keep a lid on all the little wars going on and try to keep the control of the New Republic intact. At the very end of the book Moff Disra tries to even fool Admiral Pellaeon into believing the New Republic upset at the Empire is out to destroy them. Overall this book is great but only whets your appetite for the second and final conclusion to The Hand of Thrawn duology.
